Game and character deleted

Hi, I'm new here. My daughter has spent hours and hours creating her world on Steam. Tonight when she logged on, both her world and character had disappeared. Is there a way to retrieve them? She is heartbroken. She can make a new character and world, but she's understandably frustrated.
